Support in the Middle School

To best accommodate and nurture their growing desire for independence, middle school students are assigned to a team of teachers who provide students with close personal contact.  Subject specialists and advisors take an active role in monitoring the progress of the whole child and communicating with parents.

In sixth grade, students share a core group of five specialist teachers who meet regularly to discuss student achievement and needs and coordinate curriculum.  In seventh and eighth grades, students are assigned grade level teams that share core academic classes, and teachers on each team meet weekly to discuss student performance.

Through weekly gatherings, the advisory program serves as another natural support system for students. The size of each advisory group can range between 8-14 students, and on many occasions the student’s advisor also serves as his or her core teacher. While advisors take an active role in supporting each student’s academic progress, they also help facilitate students’ social and ethical education through organized discussions and activities related to such topics as social cruelty, meaning of friendship, racism, equality and stereotypes, stress and time management, conflict resolution, decision-making, and the impact of world events.

Students may also receive academic support through our Learning Center, and the school counselor serves as a resource for students’ social and emotional needs.
