Service Learning

Greenhills aims not only to prepare our students for success in college and beyond but also to educate community leaders and to instill a lifelong passion for helping others.

As an integral part of their Greenhills education, students create and take part in events through the Service Learning Program. A number of these occur annually, while others are spawned when a specific need arises; most of the Service Learning events are created by and come to fruition through the passion and dedication of our students.

Annual Service Learning Activities

Alternative Spring Break
Greenhills Alternative Spring Break places teams of students in New Orleans communities to engage in community service and experiential learning during part of our spring break. Students perform day-long projects for community agencies and learn about issues surrounding hurricanes, the breaking of the levees and poverty.

Chipping the Trails
Since 2003, 7th grade students have delivered and spread wood chips on the trail at Barton Park, which prevents soil from running off into the Huron River and thus cuts down on the amount of turbidity of the river. As part of their science curriculum, these students will collect and analyze water-quality data at a stream adjacent to Greenhills that eventually flows to the Huron River.

T-Wall/B-Ball
Since 1993, Greenhills School has hosted this event for mentally and physically disabled students within Washtenaw County.

ACTivate the Cure
This is a student-run and student-directed theater night. All money is donated to Breast Cancer research. This has been an annual event since 1998.

VooDoo Theater Company
The Voodoo Improv Club performs this annual event to benefit The Jim Posante Memorial Fund at Greenhills.

Weekly Bagel Sale
All proceeds of this weekly event are donated to the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center.

Red Cross Blood Drive
6th graders sponsor this annual event to help give others the gift of life.

Costume Collection
All-school collection of Halloween costumes for children in need.

Candy Collection
Collection of candy for local children's "Hallozone Party" at Ozone House.

New Beginnings Academy Partnership
Twice a month, eighth-grade advisories visit New Beginnings Academy -- an Ypsilanti public charter school for students in grades PK-5, chartered by Central Michigan University -- and work one-on-one with kindergarten and first-grade students. This type of interaction fosters a healthy exchange of learning for both students involved. More importantly, students learn to care and work with others who are a different age.

Ronald McDonald House
Twice each year, Greenhills students provide food to the Ronald McDonald House pantry. Students have been providing this service at Greenhills since the mid '90s.
