Greenhills School is a small, interactive, and caring community where academic excellence is paramount. Our students graduate as individuals who are literate, caring, thinking, and morally responsible.
History & Philosophy
Greenhills was created in the late 1960s by a small group of Ann Arbor parents with a vision. They believed there was a need for an independent, non-denominational, academically rigorous, college preparatory day school in Ann Arbor.
The school opened with the mission that “Greenhills School is a community that values learning as a life-long process and teaching as an art, that respects individuals and their differences, and that honors the pursuit and attainment of excellence. Greenhills encourages a diverse body of motivated, committed, able students to develop their full intellectual, ethical, artistic and athletic potential and to flourish as curious, creative, and responsible citizens whose lives have meaning, balance, and a capacity for self-renewal.”
Greenhills School is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of Central States (ISACS), a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Association of Independent Michigan Schools (AIMS).
Lockers Without Locks
Upon entering the school, the first thing everyone notices are the lockers without locks. This is one daily affirmation that Greenhills is a unique community where trust is foremost, students are supported and excellence practiced.

We Offer Academic Excellence
Within a strong foundation of core knowledge, coursework emphasizes critical thinking, creative expression, communication and technology. Academics, however, are only part of an excellent education at Greenhills, as our students also excel in the arts, athletics and community service.We Care
Each student has an advisor -- a teacher or administrator who mentors and supports him/her.
In Middle School, team leaders and teachers meet regularly to discuss the best ways to support each child’s social, emotional and intellectual development.
Throughout the school, advisors meet regularly to discuss each student and his/her progress. Greenhills faculty understand the remarkable journey each child takes from 6th–12th grade. In our intimate educational setting, faculty support each student through his/her challenges and celebrate his/her successes.
We Challenge
Greenhills offers a challenging college preparatory program that prepares students to face the rigors of college and beyond. We achieve depth and variety in a comprehensive academic program that includes humanities, science, mathematics, English, social studies, foreign language, wellness, and fine and performing arts.
Greenhills challenges students to explore new ideas, try new activities and take on leadership opportunities. At Greenhills, students actively participate in the demanding curriculum, perform in theatrical productions, participate in athletics and organize events for the entire school.
