Space to Grow: An Advanced Biology Lab for the 21st Century
Current State
Martha and Tom Friedlander have taught science at Greenhills for a combined total of 65 years. Like most of our upper school science teachers, both Martha and Tom teach in rooms that are too small, and, in Tom’s case, in a cramped room that is also poorly ventilated and windowless. Because Greenhills science classrooms were built for a different era, they do not meet current national standards for room size, lab space, or storage. Over the years, our science faculty have amassed books, articles, samples and equipment that enhance their teaching. Their classrooms are alive with creativity and passion, but they have literally used every available space, corner, shelf and countertop.
The Dream
Today we hope you will consider helping fund a new advanced biology lab with a greenhouse equipped with a grey water reuse system. This state-of-the-art facility will enable our science teachers to move fluidly between lecture, lab work and the outdoor environment. Ultimately this will be one of five science classrooms proposed in a recently completed master plan, designed to equip all our teachers with the tools and space they need to teach their unparalleled best.
The Goal
The total cost of the advanced biology lab and attached greenhouse is $234,396. This dream won’t become a reality without your support. Please consider investing in this, a project that will enhance the science department and impact the students of Greenhills School for years to come. A gift of $10,000, $1,000, or even $100 will be truly transforming and greatly appreciated.
“If we had the right space, and more space, we could do so much! Our computer-based instruction would branch out with universal in-class internet access and laptops. We have tons of equipment, specimens, and other material that, if we had the right storage, could be used on a regular basis. And the greenhouse will help us with extended environmental initiatives and experiments for all students grades 6–12.”
