Signature Middle School ProgramsWorld Day Project — Sixth graders spend two months researching a country of their choice in depth. Through the process, they are introduced to traditional and current research techniques. The culminating project includes a detailed informational booklet, visual displays, cultural artifacts, ethnic food, and costuming representative of the country. Students present their findings on “World Day” in front of parents, Upper School students, and faculty.
Stream Study — Applying inquiry-based learning approaches, students collect water quality data in a nearby stream and build a bridge to a local retirement home. This unit incorporates the best of service learning into the curriculum for an authentic learning experience. Integrated Public Speaking — Beginning in seventh grade, students receive formal instruction in public speaking techniques. Phased into English classes a few times a year, a speech teacher works closely with students developing their oratory and expression skills. Grade Level Trips — In both an effort to reflect curricular themes as well as to provide a grade building experience, each grade takes overnight trips. In sixth grade, students enjoy hands-on learning and challenge elements at Walled Lake Recreation Center. Seventh graders visit Mackinac Island to learn about this site’s historical significance during the Revolutionary War. Finally, concepts in eight grade Civics class are enriched during this grade’s annual trip to Washington DC. Sixth Grade Senior Buddy Program — Each fall sixth grade students are matched with a senior buddy who meet weekly for planned activities and events. This program fosters a relationship that enables our sixth graders to feel comfortable with an upper school student, and in turn encourages older students to mentor younger ones. Many buddy pairs keep in touch after graduation, and in some cases alumni return to Greenhills to se their buddies graduate. <<BACKSnapshot of Middle School Message from the Head of Middle School Middle School Team System Community Building Signature Middle School Programs Activities NEXT>> |
