Greenhills 2007 Cum Laude Inductees
April 27, 2007
Ann Arbor Juniors and seniors eligible for induction into the Cum Laude Society recently learned of their selection during an all-school assembly. Cum Laude is an organization that honors academic achievement for high school students and is modeled after Phi Beta Kappa at the collegiate level. Students heard from Greenhills alum and Cum Laude member since 1983 Dr. Jonathan W. Zimmerman. Dr. Zimmerman spoke of the difference between explicit learning, such as the academic work honored at the assembly, and tacit learning, what is learned outside of academics through experience. The talk was exemplified with several stories from his experience at Greenhills—stories that every student in the audience could relate to—that taught him specific kinds of tacit knowledge. After Greenhills, Jon graduated from U-M Honors College with a BS in Physics, with Distinction. He went on to Carnegie Mellon's Tepper Graduate School of Business for a master's in business administration. He spent 4 years at Ford Motor Company as an analyst in the car product development division before entering medical school at the U-M. Jon got his MD in 1998, specializing in internal medicine. He is a staff physician in the Oakwood Healthcare System and program director of their Internal Medicine Residency Program, as well as a clinical assistant professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Class of 2007 members inducted last year as juniors are Margaret Ding, Jean Guan, Charis Hill, Tessa Marzulla, Claire Salant, Alok Swaroop and Lauren Wright. Class of 2007 members inducted as seniors are Haya Abu-Seir, Leah Bromberg, Amelia Compton, Ruthi Hortsch, Peter Keshtkar, Gianina Maturo, Leela Mirafzali, Ariana Riegel and Kimberly Sackett. Inductees from the Class of 2008 are Christine Collins, Nathan Glencer, Hayley Hoffman, Ryan Lester, Andre Pegeron, Jason Quint and Ankur Sohoni. The Cum Laude Society, currently in its centennial year, was founded in 1906 by Dr. Abram Harris, director of the Tome School in Maryland, to honor academic excellence at the high school level. The main criterion for student membership is academic excellence and only schools that exemplify a strong commitment and ability to help young people achieve that degree of scholarship are granted charters. Greenhills became a chartered chapter in 1981. In this, our 27th year, a total of 305 Greenhills students have been inducted into the society.
