College Counseling

The college counseling program at Greenhills is designed to support and serve each Greenhills student and family as young people seek to take their next educational steps after graduation. Greenhills School Photo The core focus of the program is on what is called "match": helping each student to find and matriculate at a college or university where he or she will be appropriately challenged and supported, will be comfortable, and will grow apace.

During the first two years of upper school, we offer students and their parents information relevant to their coming exploration of college admission, providing guidance in terms of course selection, involvement in the school's extracurricular life, and testing as we fundamentally stress the importance of taking advantage of the academic and other fine opportunities which the school offers.

At the start of the junior year, students begin meeting regularly with the Director of College Counseling in small groups. During these times students will hear and talk about virtually anything which is important to know with regard to college choice and college admission, from the way the process works to ways of developing their own individual priorities. As these sessions move into the second semester, we increasingly emphasize, with ongoing support and support information, the development of a "working" list of institutions which students consider serious possibilities for them.

Midway through the junior year, one of four college counselors will begin working with each student and his or her parents around the college needs and aspirations of that one individual young person. The college counselor remains available to work with each family right up through graduation.

Greenhills' college counseling program also features a highly unusual approach to the writing of a central letter of recommendation which most colleges and universities request, in which a volunteer group of 10 to 12 faculty members shares the drafting of letters and meets weekly throughout the fall semester to hear and make suggestions for the improvement of each student's letter. Another highly unusual feature of this aspect of our program is that our Head of School will read the recommendation letter to each student before it is sent to colleges.

The Director of College Counseling hosts two evening meetings for parents of juniors each year, one staffed by the college counselors and a second during which a distinguished director of admission is invited to speak, for the purpose of informing all about and helping all to understand the Greenhills program, in particular, and the college admissions process, in general. Periodically, the Director provides updates to parents either via e-mail or traditional mail concerning college admission matters of interest.

Over the years, Greenhills students have found their way to a wide variety of post-secondary education institutions around the nation, and literally around the world. We are proud of the efforts we make to allow that to happen.
