Message from the Head of Upper School
Newcomers to Greenhills often ask what it is about this place that makes it so special. From the moment one steps on campus, one can feel a generosity of spirit and warmth that go well beyond the common ethos of most schools. Faculty, students, and parents don't just care about Greenhills; they truly love this place. You can feel it just by spending time here.
Greenhills is a place where intellectual engagement matters, and where every person, adult or child, is known and valued. If you want to get at the true character of any school, pay attention to "the culture of the hallways," and listen to what people are saying as well as how they interact with one another.
In our upper school, it is not uncommon to find students engaged in a passionate debate about politics or other current events, even as they walk together arm in arm. Nor is it unusual to see students diligently working on a set of calculus problems or grappling with a Chaucerian text in the student commons.
Students and teachers know one another well here, not just in the classroom but also in other contexts. Indeed, I have been teaching in independent schools for over 15 years and have come to understand deeply the importance of relationships. What I have learned is this: the best part of one's education does not necessarily come from any particular curriculum; rather, it comes from the relationships we forge along the way.
The faculty and students at Greenhills come to know one another in profound ways that last long after students have ventured out into the world. That is why Greenhills is such a special place. At its core, it is a place that both challenges and nurtures each of us. It is what schooling is all about.
