Greenhills School Course Guide
Middle School Mathematics
Department Philosophy
- The middle school program emphasizes building a strong foundation in math skills and mathematical thinking. All 6th grade students take 6th grade math. Those with proficiency, interest, and strong organizational skills have the opportunity to explore more challenging and theoretical aspects of the work. All students take pre-algebra in 7th grade. One section of 7th grade math allows for a faster pace and extension of the material. In 8th grade students take either accelerated Algebra 8 or regular Algebra 8.
- The department seeks to develop the full potential of all students. Math teachers are sensitive to and accommodate differences in learning styles. They meet with students who seek additional help and facilitate peer tutoring. Extra-curricular enrichment activities are available. The middle school has an active math club that meets weekly and the Greenhills team has been very successful in the MathCounts competition. Interested students have the opportunity to take part in competitive examinations on the state and national level. Math enrichment courses are offered in the summer program.
- Students develop proficiency in problem solving, communication, and reasoning. Building confidence through success is an underlying objective.
- All members of the department have strong backgrounds in mathematics. Through professional development within and outside the school, the math faculty renews their enthusiasm and expands their awareness of the current issues in mathematics education. Our math curriculum is constantly discussed as we strive to serve our student population with an eye on their future.
