A2Y Service Day sends entire school into the community

Greenhills students and faculty descended on area organizations Friday as the sun beamed down on the school’s fourth annual all-school service day.

DSC_8053More than 500 students and about 70 faculty members took part in this year’s A2Y Day, during which the school shuts down and students concentrate solely on learning about service to community.

In even-numbered years like this one, that community includes Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. In odd-numbered years, it’s Detroit.

IMG_4507Greenhills enjoyed a number of new partnerships with area organizations this year. The school sent students to Tantre Farms, White Lotus Farms, and The Farm at St. Joe’s. Other students volunteered at non-profits, including Avalon Housing, Food Gatherers, Growing Hope, Habitat for Humanity, and many more. Still others visited with residents at homes for the elderly, including Glacier Hills and Heartland Health Care Center in Ann Arbor, while some students worked in area institutions like Gallup Park, Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Furstenberg Park, and more.

Greenhills Service Learning Director Alyssa Friendly said the day was organized by the students of the SLAM service club. The students contacted the organizations where students worked and planned assignments based on student interest.
