Nearly 30 members of the Greenhills community got a bonus last weekend when they volunteered at Forgotten Harvest for Motor City Saturday: the chance to sling beans and pack potatoes side-by-side with Olympic ice dancer Madison Chock.

Altogether, Chock and the Greenhills volunteers packed 14,000 pounds of potatoes and 5,000 pounds of beans for delivery next day to Detroit residents who otherwise would go hungry, said Greenhills Director of Service Learning Alyssa Friendly.

“It was so awesome to see that even Olympians find time to give back,” Friendly said.

But most participants, including Christina Ng ’21, say they always have a good time during Motor City Saturdays — even when there aren’t any celebrities on hand.

“Even if I don’t expect myself to enjoy an activity beforehand, I always end up loving it,” Ng said. “Working amongst a unifying community gives off a unique feeling of accomplishment and happiness, and it’s always worth it to spend a Saturday evening or morning for this program.”
