Professional Development & New Faculty Resources

In August, all new faculty members gather for a three-day orientation program designed to welcome them to our community and introduce them to our school’s student and professional culture. Our orientation centers joy and connection among the new faculty cohort and with our school leaders and mentors. As a cohort, participants actively engage in hands-on programming about teaching and learning, student support, and creating inclusive learning environments. During orientation, we also provide guidance to help new faculty navigate our school’s systems, technology, and procedures.

Throughout their first year at Greenhills, new faculty members engage in monthly workshops about a variety of topics related to pedagogy, grading and assessment, school life, and adolescent development. These workshops create space for the cohort to engage in enriching conversations about their individual classroom practices as well as our school community as a whole. By learning together as a cohort, new faculty members also have the opportunity to build connections, support one another, and grow with a team of educators who share diverse experiences, ideas, and perspectives.

All new faculty members are paired with a mentor to serve as a guide to the professional and student culture of our school community. Mentors provide support and thought partnership throughout the first year and beyond. Mentor pairs observe each other’s classrooms and meet to discuss pedagogy, class culture, and school life. Mentor pairs also engage in events throughout the year to further foster belonging and community connection.

As a community of learners, all Greenhills faculty members engage in a variety of professional learning and growth opportunities. We designed our school schedule to prioritize time for teachers to collaborate and learn together. Once a week, our students begin their school later so that teachers can gather as a full faculty or in smaller teams to discuss issues related to teaching and learning and school life. Additionally, professional development days throughout the year allow for our faculty to come together for deeper exploration of a variety of topics including grades and feedback, curricular innovation, and fostering inclusive, equitable learning environments.

In addition to our in-house professional development programming, all faculty members are encouraged to engage in external professional learning experiences such as attending and/or presenting at conferences and taking courses or participating in workshops. We offer several grants to fully fund these experiences. For example, the Paulus Faculty Growth and Learning Program provides every teacher with an annual grant of $750 to fund their choice of professional and personal learning activities. Additionally, the DeLay Award for Learning and Teaching Innovation endowment supports teachers in designing new courses and curricula.

Our academic department chairs and director of teaching and learning provide one-on-one instructional coaching for all teachers. These school leaders help teachers reflect on their individual practice and support their instructional vision by observing classes, offering constructive feedback, engaging in conversations about teaching and learning, and serving as a thought partner for instructional innovation and experimentation.
