Students will hear from Gretchen Keppel-Aleks, Associate Professor of Climate and Space Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan, whose work explores one of the most pressing scientific questions of our time: how carbon moves through our planet. Focusing on the carbon cycle, her research group uses atmospheric observations and remote sensing data to understand how carbon is exchanged among the atmosphere, oceans, and terrestrial ecosystems. During her talk, she will share insights from this work, including her role on NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) Science Team, as well as reflections on her own journey in the climate sciences.

Dr. Keppel-Aleks earned her Bachelor of Science from MIT before continuing to the California Institute of Technology, where she completed both a master’s degree and a PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering. From 2011 to 2013, she was a NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellow, and since 2015 she has been a member of NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) Science Team.
