Deano Smith Departing; Janelle Sterling Named Next Head of Upper School
After teaching science and serving in leadership roles at Greenhills School for 19 years—including the past four as Head of Upper School—Deano Smith has decided to relocate to Virginia to be closer to his wife and children, who now live there. During this time, Smith has touched the lives of countless students through his ability to instill wonder and foster curiosity, inspiring many to pursue studies and careers in science. Much more will be shared about Smith and his time at Greenhills in the upcoming Forum magazine and during end-of-year celebrations, where we will have the opportunity to properly recognize his many contributions to our community.
Stepping into the role of Head of Upper School at the start of the 2026–2027 school year will be Janelle Sterling, who is currently the Upper School Dean of Students at Greenhills. Since joining the school in 2020, she has taught math, coached athletics, and served as the 11th grade dean before taking on the Dean of Students role.
Sterling brings a wealth of educational and lived experience that has prepared her to lead the upper school. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership, has more than a decade of classroom experience, and has contributed to numerous school committees addressing areas ranging from facilities to finance.
“The upper school years are such an important time in a student’s life,” said Sterling. “When they know the adults around them care deeply about their success, they’re willing to take risks, stretch themselves, and discover what they’re capable of. My hope is to cultivate that culture, to ensure belonging and accountability go hand in hand, and to work closely with families to support students and uphold shared expectations.”
As Head of Upper School, Sterling will oversee all aspects of the 9th through 12th grade experience, supporting faculty and staff and empowering them to do their best work in the classroom while ensuring students are known, challenged, and supported.
