Preparation Meets Opportunity for Greenhills Boys Golf

By the time the Greenhills boys golf team arrived at regionals, much of the work had already been done. The Gryphons had spent months studying courses, refining their swings, sharpening their short games, and learning how to manage every detail of a round. When the opportunity arrived to compete for a regional championship, they were ready, and the team delivered its most complete performance of the season—claiming the regional title and punching its ticket to the MHSAA Division 3 State Finals.

“We knew we were capable of winning the regional,” Head Coach Michael Karr said. “What I really wanted to see was consistency throughout the entire round. We’d been playing well for stretches all season, but we hadn’t quite put together a complete 18 holes as a team.”

At regionals, Greenhills did exactly that. Facing challenging conditions on its home course, the Gryphons delivered their strongest collective performance of the season. Instead of letting a few difficult holes derail an otherwise solid round, they stayed composed from start to finish, producing the kind of score Karr had been waiting to see.

The result was a regional title and a confident step forward heading into the season’s biggest event. The performance was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup.

Junior Keating Holland captured the individual regional championship with a one-under-par 71, one of the finest rounds by a Gryphon golfer this season. Already among the top players in the state, Holland enters the state finals with the experience and skill to contend against Division 3’s best.

“Keating has had a great season,” Karr said. “A 71 is an exceptional score, and he’s played well at Bedford Valley before. He’s certainly capable of being in the mix.”

Senior Tai Mackey continued his strong late-season play with a runner-up finish at regionals. After illness affected him early in the spring, Mackey has found his form and has consistently posted scores in the 70s in recent rounds.

Sophomore Jonathan Hu finished fourth overall with an 82, while senior Owen Gregg earned a top-10 finish with an 84. For Gregg, the result reflected months of hard work and significant improvement. After averaging around 90 strokes per round last season, he has lowered his scoring average substantially and has played some of the best golf of his high school career this spring. Sophomore Max Frankel has also taken important strides this season, providing valuable depth to a lineup that has steadily improved from top to bottom.

For Karr, those individual performances are tied together by a common thread: preparation. The team spends countless hours refining every aspect of the game, from short-game touch to bunker play. Players also embrace the strategic side of golf, using technology to study courses long before tournament day arrives.

That preparation will be especially important at Bedford Valley Golf Club, site of this year’s state finals. Greenhills has already competed there once this season, giving players valuable familiarity with a course many had never seen before.

Today, golfers can review every hole from their phones, studying layouts and planning strategy well in advance.

“It’s easier than ever to learn a golf course before you get there,” Karr said. “But eventually you still have to execute.”

That balance between preparation and performance is part of what makes golf unique. Success depends on hours of unseen work, but ultimately comes down to a handful of swings made under pressure.

As Greenhills prepares for the state finals, the Gryphons know the competition will be fierce. Division 3 features several outstanding teams and elite individual golfers. Yet Greenhills enters the tournament with something every contender hopes to have this time of year: confidence in its preparation.

The regional championship did not happen by accident. It was the product of months of study, practice, and improvement. Now, with final exams nearly behind them and the state finals ahead, the Gryphons will have the opportunity to see just how far that preparation can take them.
