Events Celebrate National Poetry Month

The English Department announces several school-wide events to celebrate National Poetry Month here at Greenhills.

SLAM POETRY ASSEMBLY April 25, 9:42 a.m.
On Monday, April 25 there will be two simultaneous Slam Poetry Assemblies. The middle school will be in the gym with award-winning slam poet Adam Gottlieb and the upper school will be in the theater to see a performance by world-renowned slam poet Buddy Wakefield.
Adam Gottlieb was featured in the documentary Louder Than a Bomb and is currently a student at Hampshire College. Buddy Wakefield is the two-time Individual World Poetry Slam Champion featured on NPR, the BBC, HBO’s Def Poetry Jam. His work has been published internationally in dozens of books used to win multiple national collegiate debate and forensics competitions.

LOUDER THAN A BOMB DOCUMENTARY SCREENING April 25, 7:00 p.m.
The evening of Monday, April 25, Greenhills will show the documentary Louder Than A Bomb in the theater at 7:00 p.m. The screening is sponsored by the English Department and the Office of Diversity. The movie is free and poet Adam Gottlieb, one of the students featured in the film, will be on hand to answer questions.

 25 HOURS OF POETRY April 25 12:01am
Also on April 25, beginning at midnight, there will be an online event called 25 HOURS OF POETRY. The goal is to see how many original poems the Greenhills community can write and post in that timeframe. The Greenhouse wiki for this event will be open to students, teachers, staff, and parents! Prizes will be awarded for the first posted poem, the funniest poem, the shortest poem, the best use of the word gryphon, the best ode to Greenhills, and the best poem about springtime.

PUBLIC POETRY April 25-29
The week of April 25-29, Greenhills students will have the opportunity to participate in PUBLIC POETRY in the cafeteria. There will be a large-scale version of magnetic poetry on the windows of the cafeteria with 300 words printed on clear contact paper. Students will be able to move words around to create poems. Public poetry is a great way to be expressive, spontaneous, and playful with words, accompanied by the knowledge that parents, teachers, visitors, and students of all ages use the cafeteria space.

POETRY AROUND THE SCHOOL
There will also be poetry resources available throughout the building. The Greenhills Library will host a poetry display of anthologies and single-author books; students will read famous poems at grade meetings and division assemblies; and the members of the upper school poetry club, SPEAK, will post poems in unexpected places around the school.

For more information about any of these events, please email Kelly Williams, English Department Chair, atkwilliams@greenhillsschool.org.
