First Life of the Mind Event to Address Global Attacks on Education

On Thursday, October 14, Human Rights Watch International senior researcher Bede Sheppard will be the featured speaker at Greenhills’ first 2010-11 Life of the Mind event: “Protecting Education from Attack.” Sheppard will address a growing international crisis: the increasing (and increasingly violent) attacks on students, teachers and educational facilities across the globe.  The event is co-sponsored by A2Ethics.org, a local nonprofit ethics news-and-ideas website and nonpartisan events organization.

“We are very honored that Bede Sheppard is coming to Ann Arbor,” says A2ethics.org founder Jeanine DeLay. “His

investigations into attacks on education have been essential. His talk offers the opportunity to not only to learn about these attacks, but also ask questions and share our views about how we can help to protect education to ensure the right of educational access to children around the world.”

“Protecting Education from Attack” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Campbell Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free and open to the public.

In conjunction with Sheppard’s talk, A2Ethics.org is sponsoring a Zones of Learning Protection Symbol and Design Exhibit. Washtenaw County students and residents are encouraged to create an original graphic design featuring a distinctive symbol to serve as an advisory and a warning to everyone, from security forces to any and all people living, working and visiting an area, that they are entering a no-violence sanctuary.

The exhibit will showcase design entries at Greenhills the evening of October 14. For Zones of Learning Protection Symbol and Design Exhibit application forms, click here.
