WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF LOWER SCHOOL

The early years of a child’s education are not only foundational—they’re magical.

Every day in our lower school, children arrive bursting with questions, ideas, and the energy that comes from seeing the world as a place of endless possibility. Our job is to nurture that spirit, to guide it gently and thoughtfully, and to help each child begin building the skills and habits of mind that will serve them for a lifetime.

Here, learning is joyful, purposeful, and deeply personal. In small classes led by extraordinary teachers, our students feel known, supported, and challenged. They play, build, read, wonder, collaborate, create, and grow. They learn to listen, to share their thinking, to persist when something is hard—and to delight in the moment when it finally clicks.

It is an incredible privilege to help shape the beginning of a child’s learning journey. We can’t wait to welcome your family to Greenhills.

Warmly,

Jeewon Wright-Kim Head of Lower School

Lower school at Greenhills is where curiosity finds its spark

We know that children are natural scientists, storytellers, builders, and friends. In small, vibrant classrooms led by passionate, expert teachers, our students learn by doing. Through structured, purposeful play and projects, they explore the building blocks of reading, writing, math, and scientific thinking, making connections that will stay with them for life.

Where Students Are
Known and Loved

At Greenhills, every child is seen and celebrated for who they are and who they will become. We meet each student exactly where they are, guiding them with warmth, encouragement, and challenge to help them grow into confident, curious learners. It’s a deeply personal approach that honors each child’s unique path while building a shared love of discovery within our lower school community.

Building the Foundations for Lifelong Learning

In lower school, we nurture the essential skills students need to thrive:

  1. Language and Literacy

Students discover the joy of stories and self-expression as they build strong reading and writing foundations.

  2. Mathematical Thinking

Through hands-on exploration, children develop number sense, problem-solving strategies, and mathematical confidence.

  3. Scientific Curiosity

Students engage with the natural world through observation, questioning, and experiments that ignite wonder.

  4. Social-Emotional Growth

We help children learn to navigate friendships, collaborate with peers, and grow resilience in a safe, caring environment.

  5. Creative Expression

Through art, music, and movement, students discover new ways to express themselves and celebrate creativity.

Play with Purpose

At younger ages, play is a powerful teacher. Whether building structures that test gravity, writing stories inspired by nature, or collaborating on imaginative games, our lower school students learn through play that is intentional and joyful. Every day is filled with opportunities to question, experiment, and imagine.

Work and Projects

As students grow, they gradually take on more structured projects and collaborative work that deepen their understanding and expand their skills. They might build models to explore engineering concepts, write and perform original plays, or investigate real-world questions through hands-on experiments. In every stage, their natural curiosity is honored, while thoughtful guidance from teachers helps them develop focus, perseverance, and the ability to bring ideas to life.

At the Heart of Learning

Greenhills lower school is designed to help each child become the best version of themselves—nurturing curiosity, building essential skills, and inspiring a sense of wonder that will guide them in middle school, upper school, and beyond.

A CAMPUS DESIGNED
JUST FOR THEM

Located at 2203 Platt Rd, Ann Arbor

The lower school program has a home all its own—just down the road from our main campus, in a space purposefully designed for our youngest learners.

This smaller, dedicated campus offers everything children need to thrive: classrooms scaled to their size and developmental needs, flexible indoor spaces for exploration and collaboration, and ample outdoor areas for both play and learning. The environment feels warm, welcoming, and intimate—just right for sparking imagination and building confidence.

Right across the street is Ann Arbor’s County Farm Park, a beloved extension of our learning environment. Whether they’re studying habitats, writing in nature journals, or simply taking a walk to reset and recharge, our students and teachers use the park as a living classroom—one more way we connect learning to the world around us.
