ARTS EDUCATION IS ESSENTIAL FOR EVERY STUDENT.

The fine and performing arts faculty take to heart their mission to promote creative expression, communication skills, problem solving, and inventive thinking.

Courses and opportunities outside the classroom inspire lifelong appreciation through active participation in a variety of arts activities.

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIR OF FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS

The value of a well-rounded arts education goes well beyond educating artists. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Greenhills School promotes creative expression, communication skills, problem solving, and inventive thinking through courses designed to foster lifelong appreciation of the arts. Active participation in a variety of arts activities encourages personal discovery while experimentation and consistent involvement in the arts develop skills and encourage creativity.

Greenhills School values the arts as a vital part of a student’s education. With required middle school courses in art, music and drama and a tremendous variety of courses and extracurricular activities available to upper school students, everyone has the opportunity to find their artistic niche within our community. Teachers and students work together within the department and across art forms, meeting needs with a high degree of flexibility and a collaborative spirit.

Areas of instruction include: painting, drawing, sculpture, textile arts, calligraphy, jewelry-making, ceramics, printmaking, computer graphics, mosaic, and photography. Throughout the school year students display fine arts projects in gallery presentations as well as juried exhibitions throughout the Ann Arbor area.

All instrumental and vocal classes perform at least once each semester, showcasing a full range of musical experiences — from small jazz combos to orchestral and band pieces to dramatic choral works.

Music students also have access to our Music Lab, a well-equipped space used for rehearsing, recording, and editing music with advanced, industry-standard software and hardware.

Each year the upper school presents two major productions, the middle school offers one major play or musical, and the student-run theater troupe produces two shows.

Through the years the Greenhills forensics program has been consistently recognized for outstanding team and individual performances at both the middle and upper school levels.
