Poetry, fiction, essay, journalism, and original plays are the written forms of creativity and self expression. Good writing sustains careers and presents Greenhills candidates for college and future jobs. Writing distinguishes Greenhills alumni.

Teaching great writing requires great faculty, and it requires inspired and willing students. Writing is a craft, which when practiced regularly grows and flourishes. The annual McDowell Competition at Greenhills usually draws 350-plus entries. Each writer is encouraged by a great teacher. Does the competition assure the prominence of writing as a Greenhills tradition? Surely, it is the combination of great teaching and the opportunity to practice regularly, including the competition.

The McDowell Fund was created in 1993 in honor of David McDowell, Greenhills 3rd Head of School, who after ten years of service left to assume another Ann Arbor leadership role. David has returned each year now for the competition’s annual awards ceremony, as well as for the dramatic presentations of the winners work.

Greenhills alumni are known for their writing skills. Greenhills alumni will tell you those skills were honed under the tutelage of cherished faculty members who inspired and cajoled them, and then encouraged them to submit their work to the McDowell competition.

Do you value well presented ideas or the creative written word? Consider the combination. Your gift to the McDowell Fund will support great teaching and regular practice, continuing a great Greenhills tradition.
