7th Grade Spanish Students Reach Out to Chilean Miners

Every year Sra. Moffat celebrates Chilean Independence Day (Sept. 18) with her 7th graders. But this year the celebration had a special twist.

“All of my students were deeply touched by the fact that the Chilean miners have been trapped underground since August 5,” said Sra. Moffat. “When they heard that the miners were able to receive letters and that it was important to keep their spirits high for their emotional health, and after we viewed a youtube clip of the miners celebrating Chilean Independence Day, we decided that it would be great to draw pictures depicting scenes from Chilean Independence Day and send them to the miners.”

The pictures are being delivered to the miners via a Chilean contact of Sra. Moffat.

“The pictures are now on their way,” said Sra. Moffat, “though we hope that with recent positive developments in the rescue efforts, perhaps the miners will be able to enjoy the pictures above ground!”
