GH Students Featured on NPR’s “The Environment Report”

Rhiannon Tomtishen ’13 was interviewed Tuesday on NPR’s “The Environment Report.” She spoke about the work that she and Maddy Vorva ’13 have been doing for the past four years to lobby against palm oil use in Girl Scout cookies because of the orangutan habitat destruction created by palm oil plantations. Palm oil is used in a variety of bath and beauty products as well as thousands of processed foods…including Girl Scout cookies.

“…because we were Girl Scouts and because this was an issue in Girl Scout cookies, we felt that we were going to be able to make a change,” said Tomtishen about how they first got involved in the issue.

And even though they’ve made no headway with the Girls Scouts, they have tasted some success.  Kellogg’s is no longer using palm oil in its products.
