Greenhills skaters open new hockey chapter with victory at Yost

Senior Julia Chenoweth makes a big first period save.

For the first time in years, Greenhills students laced up their skates this week and took to the ice in an interscholastic hockey contest.

Three Greenhills students—freshman Evan Kanji and seniors Colin Hindle and Julia Chenoweth—are competing as part of a combined varsity team formed this year by students from Greenhills, Gabriel Richard, and Rudolf Steiner. The team, skating under Richard’s “Irish” moniker, hit the ice at the University of Michigan’s Yost Arena at 7 p.m. Nov. 19—with Chenoweth starting in goal.

A student cheering section braved the foul weather, as well, as did a number of Greenhills parents. See a Flickr gallery of the game here.

The Irish came out strong, stacking up a 7-2 lead over the first two periods against the Eagles, another combination team from the Kalamazoo area. By the time it was over the Irish had prevailed, 8-4.

The Irish play again Sunday in Royal Oak. Their next home game is Wednesday at Yost.
