Jim Lupton named Sigma Xi’s 2013 Teacher of the Year

Jim LuptonScience teacher Jim Lupton was recently selected as the recipient of the U-M Chapter of Sigma Xi‘s 2013 Science/Math Teacher of the Year Award for Washtenaw County.

The award recognizes exceptional teachers who “excite, intrigue and inspire the imagination and potential of his/her students,” as well as for involvement in related community service. He will be honored at Sigma Xi’s annual banquet April 24, where he will receive an award certificate and a check for $500.

“After only a brief time in the classroom with Jim, it is crystal clear to any visitor that not only does Jim Lupton know his subject of physics very, very well, but that he also loves helping others discover the insights that he himself finds so fascinating,” said science teacher Martha Friedlander in her letter of recommendation. “Every day, Jim fosters a thoughtful, academic approach to physics; it becomes an expectation that one is seriously thinking about the physics of the problems at hand and the students really step up to this as an intellectual challenge.”

Lupton joins five other Sigma Xi honorees on the Greenhills faculty: Martha Friedlander (1989), Tom Friedlander (1996), Ann Novak (2005), Cathy Renaud (2008), and Chris Gleason (2011).
