Family Service Night draws a crowd

web cookiesNearly 50 Greenhills families turned out November 19 for Family Service Night, a chance to spend a few hours together making life better for people who need a little help.

This year’s gathering, the third annual event, had student and faculty families decorating 400 cookies for Alpha House and Ozone House, two local shelters for youth and families, as well as making more than 50 fleece blankets for patients at the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and decoupaging and painting placemats to be distributed with Meals on Wheels.

In between, participants also enjoyed a pizza dinner and the opportunity to build community.

Speed was the order of the day. The cookies, for example, made it to Alpha House practically before the icing was dry.

“The Service Ninjas did a great job organizing and running the event,” said Greenhills Service Learning Director Alyssa Friendly, referring to a group of middle schoolers who emphasize volunteer work. Similarly, a group of the school’s Rent-a-Juniors was also on hand.  “It was honestly such an awesome night, with families working together for the greater community.”
