Gryphons claim state tennis championship

Greenhills girls tennis team earned its first state title since 2009 this weekend at the Division 4 state finals in Holly.

Greenhills coach and English teacher Mark Randolph said his team’s performances were remarkable on a variety of levels.

Vidyha Rajaprabhakaran, for example, stomped her way through the No. 3 singles competition “like Godzilla in Tokyo,” he said. Phoebe Sotiroff withstood the challenge of a tortoise-paced match to deliver “the championship point for the team as she delivered the No. 4 singles championship to herself.”

Randolph added that what may have been the most difficult matchup was in No. 1 doubles, which was defeated in the semifinals by a “brilliant” team from the Academy of the Sacred Heart. Senior Julia Friedman was able to create opportunity for the team by winning a key match against Jackson Lumen Christi in the semifinals.

The final match of the tournament, No. 3 doubles, encapsulated the weekend’s drama, Randolph said.

“After leading 4-1 in the first set they were stopped dead in their tracks by a stout Portland squad that grabbed the moment, the first set, and the lead in the second,” he said. “After holding on to go into a tiebreaker and falling behind in the breaker, Jamie Todd and Ryan Perry fought back valiantly to take the set and the match 6-2 in the third.”

The championship is the 24th captured by Greenhills athletes since the school’s founding in 1968.
